Mountain Lions rally to sweep doubleheader from Mars Hill

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Mars Hill University Saturday (March 7) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.

The Mountain Lions took the opener 7-5 before rallying in their final at-bat in game two to claim a 5-4 win.

Young Harris improved to 11-5 while Mars Hill fell to 1-8. Young Harris returns to action Sunday (March 8) with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Anderson (S.C.) University. The doubleheader will also serve as the team's Cancer Awareness Day.

The Mountain Lions took a 4-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap. The big hit in the inning was a three-run homer – her sixth of 2015 - to left field by Sarah Magill. Sara Beth Marquis added an RBI single in the third.

Mars Hill fought back and tied the game at 4 in the top of the seventh on a Shelby Culler pinch hit double to center field. Young Harris rallied in the bottom half against Mars Hill starter Chelsea Broughman (0-3) Georgia Webb and Chandler Stooksbury reached on singles and Marquis was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. Stacia Williams drove in the winning run after she was also hit by a pitch.

Jeanie Perrucci (4-2) earned the complete-game win for YHC as she struck out five.

Magill, Perrucci and Webb each led Young Harris with two hits apiece.

The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the opener. Perrucci opened the scoring with a single down the left field line and Stooksbury added a two-run single. Marquis closed out the scoring with a RBI single.

After the Lions scored three times in the second, Young Harris added a run in the third on a Murphy Davis ground out and two more in the sixth on RBI singles by Magill and Stooksbury to open up a 7-3 lead.

Darby Stanford (7-1) earned the win for Young Harris while Culler (1-2) took the loss for Mars Hill.

Stooksbury led all batters with three hits while Sydnee Weaver and Magill had two apiece in the 14-hit attack for the Mountain Lions.
