Mountain Lions, Pirates split Peach Belt doubleheader

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Young Harris College and Armstrong State University split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday (March 28) afternoon at the Armstrong Softball Field.

The Mountain Lions took game one 4-3 before the Pirates scored six unanswered runs in take game two 7-4.

Young Harris improved to 21-9 overall and to 8-4 in the league while Armstrong fell to 14-8 and 3-1. The Mountain Lions return to action Tuesday (March 31) when they travel to Valdosta, Georgia, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader against No. 1-ranked Valdosta State University.

The Mountain Lions built up a 3-0 lead through their first three at-bats in the opener. Young Harris scored a run in the first on a throwing error by the Pirates. Murphy Davis doubled home a run in the second and added a run in the third on Georgia Webb's infield single.

Armstrong got a run back in its half of the third on a Jane Trzaska double before Young Harris got the run back in the sixth when Toni Perrucci scored on a Trzaska (7-5) wild pitch. The Pirates got runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull within a run at 4-3, but Darby Stanford (13-3), who registered eight strikeouts, got out of further damage to earn the complete-game victory.

Webb led the Mountain Lions with two hits in game one.

Like the first game, the Mountain Lions jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Young Harris took advantage of two Armstrong errors for its two runs in the first inning before Sydnee Weaver doubled in a run in the fourth before Davis added a sacrifice fly.

Armstrong added two runs in the fourth and fourth more in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. The big hits for the Pirates were two-out hits by Rachel Reynolds – a RBI single to left – and Savanna Gladue – a two-run triple down the right field line – off Stanford in the fifth inning.

Webb led the Mountain Lions with two hits in game two.

Ollivia McLemore (7-3) earned the complete-game win for the Pirates in the nightcap.
