VALDOSTA, Ga. – Top-ranked Valdosta State University took a non-conference softball doubleheader from Young Harris College Tuesday (March 31) afternoon at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.
The Blazers took the opener 12-0 in five innings before rallying for a 6-3 victory in game two.
Valdosta State improved to 36-2 while the Mountain Lions fell to 21-11. Young Harris steps back into Peach Belt Conference action Friday (April 3) when they host the University of South Carolina Aiken in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at E.D. Rivers Field.
Caitlyn Calhoun (21-1) tossed a no-hitter in the opener as she struck out eight. She only allowed two batters to reach on a walk and a hit batter. Jeanie Perrucci (7-5) took the loss for Young Harris.
Young Harris took a 3-2 lead in the nightcap with a three-run fourth inning. Chandler Stooksbury had a two-run homer – her fourth of the season – and Sydnee Weaver added an RBI single to left.
The Blazers took the lead back with a three-run fifth as Fran Johnson added a home run and Heather Robinson added a two-run double to left off YHC starter Darby Stanford (13-4).
Reliever Maci Fletcher (5-1) earned the win in relief with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Weaver led the Mountain Lions with two hits in game two.
