Mountain Lions, Cougars split Peach Belt doubleheader

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College and Columbus State University split a Peach Belt softball doubleheader Saturday (March 21) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.

The Mountain Lions rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in the opener to record a wild 10-9 victory while Columbus State took game two 13-3 in five innings.

Young Harris improved to 18-8 overall and to 7-3 in the Peach Belt while Columbus State fell to 18-14 and 4-4. Young Harris returns to action at home Wednesday (March 25) with a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against the University of West Georgia.

The Mountain Lions entered their final at-bat down 9-3. Lindsay Tudor got the rally going with a two-run single to center. Murphy Davis added a RBI single through the left side to pull the Mountain Lions, who have four wins in the final at-bat at home this season, within 9-7.  Young Harris tied the game at 9 when Sarah Magill stroked a two-run single to right-center field. The Mountain Lions completed the comeback when Georgia Webb singled through the right side to end the game.

Webb and Tudor led the 14-hit attack for YHC with three hits each. Sarah Beth Marquis and Davis accounted for two hits apiece while Stacia Williams added a solo homer in the second inning. Magill, Tudor and Davis each drove in two runs for the Mountain Lions.

Darby Stanford (11-2) earned the win while Lindsey DeFee (2-6) absorbed the loss.

Columbus State scored in every inning but one as they collected 15 hits to take the nightcap. Taylor Turner (7-2) scattered five hits to earn the win, while Jeanie Perrucci (6-4) took the loss.

Magill collected two hits for the Mountain Lions in game two while Maddie Garner had a two-run double in the fifth.
