Mountain Lions sweep past Saints

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from Flagler College Wednesday (March 18) afternoon at E.D. Rivers Field.

The Mountain Lions smacked three home runs – two from Sarah Magill – in the opener as Young Harris won 6-2 and used a three-run fifth to claim the nightcap 7-4.

With the sweep, the Mountain Lions improved to 17-7 overall and to 6-2 in the league while the Saints fell to 7-24 and remained winless in eight tries in the league. Young Harris will return to action Saturday (March 21) at 2 p.m. when they host Columbus State University in a PBC affair. The doubleheader will also be the team's Military Appreciation Day.

In the first game, Sydnee Weaver led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple. Jeanie Perrucci followed with a fly out to score Weaver and break the 2-all tie. Magill added an insurance run with a solo home run right after the sacrifice fly. It was Magill's second home run of the game. Magill, who has a team-high nine home runs in 2015,  hit another solo homer in the first.

That would be all Darby Stanford (10-2) would need. She scattered six hits, allowed one earned run, walked one and struck out five to earn a complete game victory.

Magill went 3-for-3 with the two home runs and two runs batted in. Murphy Davis went 2-for-3 with a double and she scored a run. Chandler Stooksbury collected two singles and drove in a run.

Haleigh Corbally (2-5) tossed five innings and allowed eight hits and three earned runs. She struck out four batters.

Malloree Escue singled twice for the Saints. Hollianne Dohrn hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 2.

The Mountain Lions used a three-run fifth inning in the nightcap to rally to a 7-4 win. Magill and Georgia Webb started the inning with back-to-back doubles. Webb's drove in Magill to tie the game at 4. Later in the inning, Lindsay Tudor belted a two-run home run to give Young Harris a 6-4 lead.

Rachel Benson (1-0) picked up the win in relief after tossing three innings. She scattered four hits and allowed one run. Stanford came on to close the game and earned the save after pitching two scoreless innings and striking out two batters.

Webb went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and she scored a run. Magill collected a single, double and scored a run.

Katelynn Smith (2-7) surrendered eight hits and five earned runs in five innings of work. She walked four and struck out four.

Flagler led 4-2 after three innings of play.
