Mountain Lions sweep doubleheader from UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Young Harris College swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke Monday (March 16) afternoon at LRA Field.

The Mountain Lions rallied to take game one over the Braves 5-4 on Georgia Webb's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Young Harris easily took the nightcap 11-2 in five innings.

Young Harris improved to 15-7 overall and to 4-2 in the Peach Belt while the Braves fell to 14-11 and 2-6. The Mountain Lions return to E.D. Rivers Field Wednesday (March 18) when they host a 3 p.m. PBC doubleheader against Flagler College.

Young Harris tied the opener at 1 on Chandler Stooksbury's homer to left field in the second inning. Jeanie Perrucci's RBI single in  the third inning gave the Mountain Lions a 2-1 lead before Sarah Magill belted a two-run homer – her seventh of 2015 – to left field in the sixth.

The Braves tied the game at 4 with a three-run sixth inning before the Mountain Lions rallied in the eighth inning to claim the win.

Darby Stanford (9-2) struck out seven to earn the win while Katie Saunders (6-6) took the loss.

Sydnee Weaver and Perrucci led the Mountain Lions with two hits apiece.

The Mountain Lions scored in every inning but the first as they earned the win in game two.

Young Harris spotted UNCP a 2-0 lead in the first before they rallied. Sarah Beth Marquis got a run back on her home to left in the second and Young Harris tied the game at 2 an inning later on Magill's sacrifice fly. The Mountain Lions also added an unearned run in the third to take the lead for good.

Young Harris broke the game open with five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth against UNCP starter Dakota Levine (1-2) to end the game early. Perrucci (6-3) allowed just three hits to earn the win for the Mountain Lions.

Weaver led the way for the Mountain Lions in game two with three hits – including two doubles – and drove in three runs. Perrucci, Marquis and Lindsay Tudor each collected two hits as the Mountain Lions amassed 13 of them in the nightcap.
