MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Despite not playing a game due to the winter weather the past two weeks, Young Harris College opened its Peach Belt Conference schedule with a sweep of the University of Montevallo Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon at Orr Park.
The Mountain Lions took the opener 7-1 before shutting out the Falcons 12-0 in five innings in game two.
Young Harris improved 9-5 overall and to 2-0 in the Peach Belt while Montevallo fell to 9-11 and 0-2. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (March 4) when they host cross-mountain rival University of North Georgia in a 4 p.m. PBC doubleheader at E.D. Rivers Field.
Young Harris took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Sydnee Weaver tripled and scored on Jeanie Perrucci's infield single. Georgia Webb added an RBI ground out.
Murphy Davis added a run-scoring double in the second before the Mountain Lions broke the game open with a three-run fifth to take a 6-0 lead. Perrucci had a two-run triple in the inning while Sarah Magill added a sacrifice fly. Magill added a RBI sacrifice bunt in the seventh.
Perrucci had three hits while Weaver and Webb each had two as Young Harris collected 10 hits.
Darby Stanford (6-1) struck out nine and scattered four hits in the complete-game effort while Jostlyn Higgerson (6-6) took the loss for the Falcons.
The Mountain Lions, who scored in every inning of game two, got 14 hits, including four home runs. Sarah Belt Marquis led off the second inning with a home run to left field and added a two-run homer to left an inning later. Webb also smacked a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Magill added a two-run shot to left in the fifth.
Weaver led Young Harris with four hits while Magill had three. Webb and Marquis added two hits apiece. Magill drove in five runs for the Mountain Lions while Marquis added three RBI.
Perrucci (3-2) tossed a one-hitter for the Mountain Lions while striking out five. Kelsey King (1-3) took the loss for Montevallo.
