Young Harris picks up two wins at Cougar Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Young Harris College softball team picked up two wins Saturday (Feb. 14) afternoon on the second day of Lady Cougars Classic.

The Mountain Lions improved to 7-3 on the season as they defeated Tusculum College 8-3 in their opener and then ended their contest in six innings with a 9-1 decision over Belmont Abbey College.

Young Harris will wrap up play at the tournament with games against Florida Institute of Technology at 12:30 p.m. and a 3 p.m. contest against Lincoln Memorial University. The start times were pushed back an hour due to the expected frigid temperatures overnight.

The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Tusculum on Georgia Webb's single. After Tusculum tied the game at 2 in the second, the Mountain Lions regained the lead at 4-2 in the fourth as Sarah Magill brought both runs home after her double to right-center field.

The Pioneers got a run back in the top of the fifth, but the Mountain Lions broke up the contest with four runs in the fifth inning off Tusculum starter Eliza Davis. Lindsay Tudor drove in the first run with a single to center and Rachel Benson followed with a RBI double. Sydnee Weaver closed out the scoring with a two-run ground-rule double to center.

Darby Stanford (5-0) earned the complete-game win for the Mountain Lions and struck out four.

Weaver and Webb each had three hits in the 13-hit attack for Young Harris. Magill also added two hits.

The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Belmont Abbey on a RBI single by Stacia Williams. Young Harris added four more runs in the third. Williams supplied the big hit in the inning with a three-run homer to left-center.  Webb also added an RBI double.

The Crusaders scratched across a run in the fourth before the Mountain Lions ended the game early with four runs in the sixth inning. Chandler Stooksbury provided the big bat in the inning with a three-run homer to left field.

Jeanie Perrucci (2-2) was the benefactor off all the run. She scattered five hits and struck out a season-high eight.

Williams had three hits for the Mountain Lions while Weaver and Webb contributed two apiece.
