Wilson's 31 points lead YHC past Trojans 83-75

ANDERSON, S.C. | C.J. Wilson scored 31 points as Young Harris College defeated Anderson (S.C.) University 83-75 in a non-conference men's basketball victory Wednesday (Dec. 2) at the Abney Center.

The Mountain Lions snapped a four-game losing streak as they improved to 2-6 while the Trojans fell to 2-4. Young Harris now breaks for final exams and they will return to action Dec. 12 with a 2 p.m. contest against Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta.

After Rakish Taylor's layup tied the game for the seventh time at 20 for Anderson, the Mountain Lions took the lead for good at 23-20 on a Wilson three-pointer with 10:10 left. That trey jump started a 19-6 run as Young Harris opened up a 39-26 lead on a Wilson layup with 3:17 remaining in the half.

A jumper in the paint by Taylor on the first possession of the second half by the Trojans cut the deficit to eight points (45-37); however, the Mountain Lions scored nine unanswered points – five by Ben Waterhouse – to open up a 17-point lead (54-37) on a Wilson layup with 17:23 remaining.

The Trojans battled back and got as close as six points (67-61) on a Maurice Howard three-pointer with 7:35 to play, but a layup and a three-pointer from Waterhouse pushed the advantage back to 11 points (72-61) with 5:12 left. Anderson would trim the YHC lead to four points (77-73) on a Lex Davis three-pointer with 44 seconds to go.

However, the Mountain Lions, which shot 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the free throw line, sealed the game from the charity stripe as they went 6-of-6 over the final 35 seconds.

Wilson finished with 31 points and is now 28 points shy of becoming Young Harris' third 1,000-point scorer in the NCAA era. He added seven assists and six rebounds while Waterhouse tallied 17 points. Marques McKoy and Marcellus Roberts also scored in double figures with 11 points each. McKoy also pulled down eight rebounds while J.B. Charles added seven points and eight rebounds.

Howard and Randall Shaw led the Trojans with 20 points apiece while Taylor contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds.
