YOUNG HARRIS, Ga
. | Virginia Scott scored 14 points to lead a balanced attack as the Young Harris College women's basketball team opened their 2015-16 season with a 94-59 non-conference victory over Hiwassee College Tuesday (Nov. 17) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions improved to 1-0 and they return to action Thursday (Nov. 19) with a 7 p.m. contest against Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. Hiwassee fell to 1-6.

Young Harris led from wire to wire as they scored the 16 of the first 19 points as the Mountain Lions led 16-3 after a Savannah Anderson tip in with 6:09 left in the first quarter.  The Mountain Lions scored 28 of their 33 points in the first quarter in the paint as Young Harris scored 16 points off Hiwassee turnovers.

The Mountain Lions set five new single-game standards in the NCAA era with the win. Young Harris set records in points (94), steals (23), three-point field goals attempted (27), field goals attempted (87), and field goals made (40).

Young Harris led 52-26 at the half and lead by as many as 44 points (92-48) on a Rachel Harrell free throw with 3:42 remaining in the game.

The Mountain Lions shot 46 percent (40-of-87) from the floor and held a 54-36 rebounding average over the Tigers. The Mountain Lions held a 68-14 margin in points scored in the paint while the Mountain Lions held a 57-15 advantage in bench points as Young Harris held Hiwassee to 31.7 percent (19-of-60) shooting.

"Everyone on our team played double figure minutes tonight," said Young Harris head coach Matt Stearsman. "I think that is a major positive for this group. We were a little fragile after (exhibitions against) Lipscomb and Belmont, so it was good to go out and just relax and have fun. I was happy with our effort and I think you can see we are athletic and have a lot of options. We had four players in double figures and three of those players came off the bench.  I'm very satisfied with how every player played."

Meredith Tarver added 11 points while Sarah Garner and Amanda Okodugha contributed 10 apiece. Anderson grabbed nine rebounds to go with her eight points while Jasmine Knight and Sara Jorgensen each grabbed seven rebounds and Garner added six rebounds. Briana Bell added nine points while Jenny Vernet tallied eight and Jada Williams contributed seven to the offensive attack. Knight added five assists and four steals while Harrell and Okodugha added three each.

Halei Lequire led the Tigers with 15 points.
