JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. | Carson-Newman University scored three goals in a 15-minute span midway through the second half as the Eagles upset Young Harris College 3-0 in a non-conference men's soccer match Tuesday (Oct. 13) afternoon at McCown Field.
The Eagles picked up their first win ever against the Mountain Lions as they improved to 9-2-1. Young Harris, which moved up three spots to No. 16 in the NSCAA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll earlier in the day, fell to 9-1-0. It was the first road loss for the Mountain Lions dating back to September 2013 – 15 matches. The Mountain Lions return to action Saturday (Oct. 17) when they travel to Americus, Georgia, for a 3:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference match against Georgia Southwestern State University.
Carson-Newman took a 1-0 lead at the 59:12 mark as Thibault Mathorez knocked the ball in off a cross from Polyminos Avgousti. The Eagles added an own goal nine minutes later when a YHC defender knocked in a rebound into the net while trying to clear the ball. Carson-Newman got its final goal at the 74:16 mark on Tom Read's fourth goal of the season off an assist from Nick Skoda.
Carson-Newman held a 12-11 advantage on shots and a 9-2 margin on corner kicks. Kavi Luchowa stopped two shots in goal for the Eagles as he recorded the shutout while Anton Viden had four saves for the Mountain Lions.
