YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Sean Brennan's jumper at the buzzer rallied the University of North Georgia past Young Harris College 84-82 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Monday (Jan. 5) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Nighthawks, who rallied from seven points down in the final 2:24, improved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference while the Mountain Lions fell to 5-5 and 2-2. Young Harris will travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, Wednesday (Jan. 7) for a 7:30 p.m. PBC contest against No. 25-ranked Lander University.
Young Harris took an 80-73 lead with 2:24 to play after Herdie Lawrence hit a three-pointer – his fourth on the game. It would be the final field goal by the Mountain Lions.
"I was proud of the way we played the game tonight," said YHC head basketball coach Pete Herrmann. "Normally when we are up by seven points with 2:24, we are usually pretty good at closing it out. We got some big points from C.J. and Kevin hit some big baskets in the second half."
Brennan, who finished with a team-high 18 points, got the rally started with two free throws and Ebo Smith hit a three-pointer to close to within two points (80-78) with 1:14 to play. Smith then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and was fouled on the play. Smith, who finished with 15 points, sank both free throws with 1:14 left to knot the game at 80.
After Young Harris missed a shot on its next possession, the Nighthawks took the lead 82-80 on T.J. Williams' layup. The Mountain Lions tied the game at 82 on two C.J. Wilson free throws with 28.9 seconds remaining. Wilson led the Mountain Lions with 22 points.
As time was running down, Shaquan Cantrell missed a three-pointer from the left side and the ball bounced to Brennan near the free throw line and he swished the game winner over the outstretched hands of two YHC defenders as the horn sounded.
Williams finished with 12 points and Tyler Dominy added 11 points and five assists. Brennan finished with a double double as he grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds along with his five assists and four steals.
Kevin Altidor added a double double as he grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with his 19 points while Lawrence finished with 18 points.
