YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Georgia College used a 14-1 run midway through the second half to pull away from Young Harris College 62-48 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday (Jan. 28) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Bobcats improved to 9-9 overall and to 5-6 in the league while the Mountain Lions dropped to 8-10 and 5-6. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Jan. 30) with a 1:30 p.m. PBC home contest against the University of South Carolina Aiken.
Georgia College led 29-24 at the half and pushed the lead to seven (35-28) on two free throws by Belinda Schaafsma with 14:59 remaining. Young Harris used a 9-2 run to tie the game at 37 on a Briana Bell jumper with 9:27 to play.
Shanteona Keys, who led the Mountain Lions with 30 points (18 in the second half), gave the Bobcats the lead for just over a minute later when she hit a three-pointer to give GC a 40-37 lead. Keys, who hit 13-of-16 of her attempts from the free throw line, scored 10 of her points during the 14-1 run that saw the Bobcats open a 51-38 lead on a free throw by Enisha Dorsey with 5:19 left,
"Give credit to Georgia College," said YHC interim head coach Matt Stearsman. "They came into a great environment and handled their business. We were slow to get started, which has been a problem for us, and we couldn't dig ourselves out of the hole. They made a run in the second and we couldn't get enough stops to get back in it."
The closed the Mountain Lions would get the remainder of the game was eight points (51-43) after Virginia Scott hit a three-pointer with 4:07 remaining.
LaRice Walker added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Bobcats while Donley finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
Peyton Robertson led the Mountain Lions with eight points while Rachel Harrell and Kaycee Cash each added seven.
