Bell, Scott leads Mountain Lions past Jaguars 59-50

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Briana Bell and Virginia Scott combined for 31 points as Young Harris College recorded a 59-50 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over Georgia Regents University Augusta Monday (Jan. 19) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions notched their fourth consecutive win as they improved to 8-8 overall and to 5-4 in the league while the Jaguars fell to 2-14 and 1-8. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Jan. 24) for a 1:30 p.m. contest at No. 19 Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia.

GRU Augusta led by as many as eight points (12-4) in the first half before taking a 29-25 lead at the half. Young Harris took its first lead of the game at 33-31 when Chan Fann hit both free throws with 15:51 left in the contest. That was part of a 21-3 run over an eight-minute stretch that saw the Mountain Lions open up a 48-34 lead on a Peyton Robertson three-pointer from the top of the key with 8:39 left. Bell scored eight of her 16 points – tying her career high – during that stretch.

"What a great defensive effort," said YHC interim head coach Matt Stearsman. "If you can hold teams in the 50s, you give yourself a chance. We moved the ball well and played hard. GRU is well coached and did a lot of different things on defense and we handled it well. Our effort is getting better every time out. This is a fun team to coach and I hope it is fun to watch."

The Mountain Lions are ranked eighth in NCAA Division II in scoring defense, allowing their opponents 55.5 points a contest. Young Harris, which is ranked 23rd in field goal percentage defense (.349), held the Jaguars to 35.7 percent (20-of-56) shooting from the floor, including just 25.0 percent (7-of-28) in the final 20 minutes.

The closest the Jaguars got the remainder of the game (48-43) with 4:40 remaining.

Scott also tied her career high with 15 points for the Mountain Lions. Shereese Williams, Robertson and Fann each finished with eight points.  Williams and Kaycee Cash each grabbed six rebounds.

Camille Gee led the Jaguars with 13 points while Tavia Sykes (12) and Joshlyn Belcher (11) finished in double figures. Kariel Hutt and Erika Waters each had seven rebounds.
