Mountain Lions roar past Hurricanes 78-59

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Shereese Williams led four players in double figures as the Young Harris College women's basketball team easily defeated Georgia Southwestern State University 78-59 in a Peach Belt Conference contest Saturday (Jan. 10) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 5-8 overall and to 2-4 in the conference while the Hurricanes slipped to 9-4 and 3-3. Young Harris returns to the court Wednesday (Jan. 14) when they host the University of Montevallo in a 5:30 p.m. league affair.

"I am extremely proud of these young ladies," said YHC interim head coach Matt Stearsman. "We put it all together today and we played very well. We were balanced on offense and played with great intensity on defense. It was fun to watch and I think they had fun playing together."

The Mountain Lions shot a season-best 52.5 percent (31-of-59) from the field as they led all but 40 seconds of the game. Young Harris held a 41-28 advantage on the glass and they recorded 25 assists. Young Harris scored 21 points off the 18 Georgia Southwestern State turnovers and the YHC bench outscored its opposition 38-19.

Young Harris led 38-25 at the half and used a 12-0 run to open up a 27-point lead (67-40) on a Kaycee Cash layup with 7:35 to play.

Williams finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Cash recorded a double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds (seven offensive). Peyton Robertson added 11 points while Chan Fann had 10. Rachel Harrell tossed in nine points while Briana Bell contributed eight more.
