MARS HILL, N.C. – Ilija Ilic scored twice and added an assist as the No. 24-ranked Young Harris College a 5-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over Mars Hill University Wednesday (Sept. 10) evening at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
The Mountain Lions improved to 2-0-1 while the Lions fell to 0-2-0. Young Harris returns to the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field Sunday (Sept. 14) for a 1:30 p.m. contest against the University of West Alabama.
An own goal by the Lions gave Young Harris a 1-0 lead six minutes into the match. Thirteen minutes later Khurram Shazad scored from six yards out off a quick pass from Paco Craig. Lewis Hilton pushed across Young Harris' third goal off a high pass from Ilic at the 30:04 mark.
Ilic scored an unassisted goal from 30 yards out in the 62nd minute after intercepting a Mars Hill goal kick. Ilic then scored his second goal of the match at the 74:46 mark off a rebound. The goal was assisted by Craig Quinn. Mars Hill's Thomaz Freitas converted a penalty kick put the Lions at the 83:47 mark for its lone goal.
Young Harris outshot the Lions, 17-14 and edged MHU in corner kicks, 5-4. Anton Vidén played all 90 minutes in the net for Young Harris and made eight saves while Oliver Pannell and Chris Mitchell combined for eight saves for Mars Hill.
