YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Khurram Shazad's goal with 2:50 remaining in the first overtime helped No. 24 Young Harris College rally from a two-goal deficit as the Mountain Lions defeated the University of West Alabama 3-2 in a non-conference men's soccer match Sunday (Sept. 14) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions captured their third consecutive victory as they improved to 3-0-1 while the Tigers suffered their first loss of 2014 as they fell to 3-1-0. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Sept. 20) with a 7 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest against cross-mountain rival University of North Georgia in the Battle for Blood Mountain rivalry.
West Alabama took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on a score by Thibault Charmey – his sixth of the year - off an assist from Emmanuel Mondestin. The Tigers doubled their advantage less than three minutes in the second half as Alex Brown headed the ball in off a Brian Meadows corner kick.
The Mountain Lions, who outshot West Alabama 27-9 (15-4 on goal), began their comeback as Lewis Hilton blasted his third goal of the year from the top of the box after a pass from teammate Ilija Ilic at the 68:42 mark. Young Harris equalized the match at 2 just over 10 minutes later as Paco Craig headed the ball into the left side of the net after André Johansson served the ball into the box. It was Craig's second goal of 2014.
Shazad scored the deciding goal after collected the ball down the right side and firing a shot from six yards out past the outstretched hands of the UWA keeper and into the left side of the net for the golden goal. It was Shazad's second goal of the season.
Lavares Stone recorded 11 saves in net for the Tigers while Brad Louis tallied one. Jordan Bradshaw had two saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
