YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College infielder Adam Moore hit two grand slams as the Mountain Lions split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader with No. 12 University of South Carolina Aiken Friday (March 14) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Pacers outslugged Young Harris 12-8 in the opener before Moore led the Mountain Lions to a 13-3 win over USC Aiken in the nightcap.
Young Harris improved to 11-14 overall and to 2-9 in the Peach Belt while the Pacers slipped to 17-6 and 7-4. The rubber game of the series will be played Saturday (March 15) at 2 p.m.
Moore's first grand slam to left field highlighted a six-run fifth inning that chased USC Aiken starter Danny Wissman (4-1) and gave the Mountain Lions a commanding 9-1 lead. Moore added his other grand slam to left in the eighth inning to give Young Harris a 13-2 lead. Moore's eight RBI tied a college record (four-year era) and his two grand slams set a Peach Belt record for a conference game.
Young Harris only had seven hits in the nightcap, but took advantage of eight free passes and three errors by the Pacers. Besides Moore, Tom Valichka and David Atwood had two hits each in the second game. Valichka, who had a double, also drove in two runs.
Tyler Isbell and reliever Justin Cooper (2-3) combined to allow just seven hits and struck out five. Cooper pitched the final five innings to earn the win.
USC Aiken used a six-run fifth inning in the first game highlighted by a three-run homer by T.J. Costen to open a 9-4 lead in game one. Costen, who went 4-for-5, drove in six runs for the Pacers.
Young Harris got home runs from Josh Rudnik, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Jack Morrow, who went 4-for-4. Atwood and Valichka also contributed two hits each as the Mountain Lions collected 13 in the opener. Bowen Klosinski and Valichka also drove in two runs.
Derek Beasley (4-0) earned the win while Taylor Topping (1-3) took the loss. Taylor Peed earned his first save of the season as he got the final two outs for the Pacers.
