Cooper sizzles in Young Harris' 5-1 win over Shorter

ROME, Ga. – Pitcher Justin Cooper allowed three hits and struck out 10 as Young Harris College recorded a 5-1 non-conference baseball victory over Shorter University Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon at the Ledbetter Complex.

The Mountain Lions improved to 2-3 while the Hawks fell to 1-5. The two teams will conclude their three-game weekend series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday (Feb. 9).

Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the first. Josh Rudnik led off the game by being hit by a pitch from starter Justin Machado (0-2). Rudnik moved to third base on a balk and a wild pitch before David Atwood, who went 3-for-5, drove him in with a single to right,

The Mountain Lions added an unearned run in the second before taking a 4-0 lead with two more runs in the sixth, including an RBI single to center field by Rudnik, who went 2-for-4.

The only mistake by Cooper (1-0) was giving up a Zach Santos home run in the bottom of the sixth. Young Harris accounted for its other run in the eighth as Spencer Thomas, who reached on a bunt single, scored on a wild pitch.

Trey Rogers and Tom Valichka each had two hits as the Mountain Lions banged out 12 on the afternoon.
