YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Five different Young Harris College women's soccer players scored as the Mountain Lions shut out Tennessee Temple University 5-0 in a non-conference match Monday (Oct. 6) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 3-6-0 while the Crusaders fell to 2-8-0. Young Harris returns to Peach Belt Conference action Wednesday (Oct. 8) when they travel to Milledgeville, Georgia, for a 6 p.m. match against Georgia College.
Dani Pena notched the first goal for Young Harris, which outshot the Crusaders 35-0 (19-0 on goal), at the 6:41 mark off a through ball from Hanna Johnsson. It was Pena's second goal of 2014. Ten minutes later, Sydney Baird served the ball in to Elana Newman at the top of the box and Newman put it in the back of the net for her first of the season to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead.
Young Harris struck quickly as the start of the second half when Karly Zacharias served the ball in from the left side and Madelyn Youngblood deposited the goal into the left corner of the net at the 48:43 mark to give the Mountain Lions a 3-0 lead. It was Youngblood's first goal of the season.
The Mountain Lions pushed across two goals in just over a two-minute span late in the match to account for the final score. Carly Rich passed the ball to Kaeli McDermott in the box and McDermott chipped the ball over the Tennessee Temple goalkeeper's head for her first goal of the season at the 76:11 mark. Rich scored her third goal of the season from six yards out off a cross from Pena at the 78:29 mark.
Three goalkeepers – Arielle Charles, Kylie Mason and Yustin Nambo – shared the second shutout of the season for the Mountain Lions. Lyndi Dodd recorded 14 saves in goal for the Crusaders.
