MORROW, Ga. – Khurram Shazad scored twice as Young Harris College claimed its second consecutive Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer title as the Mountain Lions shut out Clayton State University 4-0 Wednesday (Oct. 29) evening at Laker Field.
The No. 3-ranked Mountain Lions improved to 13-0-1 overall and to 8-0-0 in the league while the Lakers slipped to 7-7-1 and 4-5-0. Young Harris, which remains ranked No. 1 in the Southeast Region in the latest NCAA Division II Regional Rankings, will close out its regular season Saturday (Nov. 1) as they travel to Montevallo, Alabama, for a 3:30 p.m. Central time match against the University of Montevallo.
The Mountain Lions scored twice in a five-minute span in the early moments of the first half. Kendall Carballo scored his seventh goal of the season off an assist from Alex Wyper at the 11:52 mark and Shazad scored his first goal at the 16:41 mark off an assist from Ilija Ilic.
Shazad scored his 12th goal of 2014 at the 25:41 mark after he sidestepped the Clayton State goalkeeper. The strike was assisted by Samuel Mansour. The Mountain Lions, who outshot Clayton State 27-5 (16-3 on frame), closed out the scoring when Craig Quinn knocked in his third goal of the season on a deflection off the goalkeeper with 2:35 remaining.
Anton Vidén stopped three shots in goal for the Mountain Lions as he registered his second shutout of the season while Nick Punter turned away 12 for the Lakers.
