No. 5 Mountain Lions take 3-1 win over Carson-Newman

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Paco Craig had a goal and an assist as Young Harris College used three second half goals to record a 3-1 non-conference victory over Carson-Newman University Wednesday (Oct. 15) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The fifth-ranked Mountain Lions improved to 9-0-1 while the 2013 NCAA Division II national runner up Eagles fell to 5-5-2. Young Harris returns to Peach Belt Conference play Saturday (Oct. 18) with a 7:30 p.m. contest at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field against Georgia Southwestern State University.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half before Craig found the back of the net in the 59th minute as he converted the rebound of Alex Wyper's initial missed shot. It was Craig's fifth tally of 2014. The Eagles took just over two minutes to tie the match at 1 on a set piece as Rurik Pereira headed in Kristian Speake's corner kick.

The Mountain Lions took a 2-1 lead at the 79:23 mark as Kendall Carballo headed in Craig's cross into the left corner of the goal. It was Carballo's third strike of the season. Ilija Ilic added an insurance goal five minutes later as he converted a penalty kick after an YHC player was fouled in the box. It was his ninth goal of the year.

Young Harris held a 24-14 advantage on shots, including a 15-5 difference on goal. Carson-Newman goalkeeper Kavi Luchowa stopped 11 shots while Anton Víden corralled four for the Mountain Lions.
