YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Armstrong State University defeated Young Harris College 3-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday (Oct. 11) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Pirates improved to 7-4-0 overall and to 3-3-0 inside the conference while the Mountain Lions slipped to 3-8-0 and 1-6-0. Young Harris continues its homestand Thursday (Oct. 16) with a 7 p.m. non-conference match against Emmanuel (Ga.) College.
McKenzie Anderson gave Armstrong the 1-0 lead midway through the first half on her direct kick from outside the box that went into the top right corner of the goal. It was Anderson's first strike of the year. The Pirates doubled their lead at the 37:23 mark when Armstrong converted a set piece off Sarah Olin's corner when Taylor Russell headed the ball in from 10 yards out. It was Russell's first goal of 2014.
Young Harris had its best chance to score with less than 10 minutes remaining when Camille Borneo's shot was cleared off the line by an Armstrong defender. The Pirates' final goal came at the 81:49 mark when Olin collected a loose ball outside the box and knocked her third goal of the season into the bottom of the net.
Emily Ober led the Mountain Lions with two shots, while Dani Pena, Hanna Johnsson, Madelyn Youngblood and Kaylee Bromell each collected one.
Goalkeepers Maggie Carson and Erica Laurens shared the shutout for the Pirates while Arielle Charles stopped a career-high 14 shots for the Mountain Lions.
