MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Young Harris scored three times in a 12-minute span in the second half as Young Harris College shut out Barry University 4-0 in a men's soccer match Sunday (Sept. 8) afternoon in a match shortened due to weather at Buccaneer Field.
The Buccaneers fell to 0-2-0 after their second consecutive loss at the hands of a Peach Belt Conference institution, while the Mountain Lions registered their second consecutive win against a Sunshine State Conference school and improved to 2-0-0. The match was delayed at the start by 70 minutes due to lightning and was ended early with 11:38 remaining on the clock due to more lightning in the area. Young Harris continues its season opening five-match road trip Wednesday (Sept. 11) when they travel to Anderson, S.C., for a 4 p.m. encounter with Anderson (S.C.) University.
Young Harris jumped out a 1-0 lead at the 10:01 mark as William Schonfeldt took the cross from the left side from Niall McCabe and then beat the Barry goalkeeper for the score. It would stay that way until McCabe buried a penalty kick into the left corner of the goal at the 63:17 mark.
Ilija Ilic scored his second goal in as many matches when he converted a Homero Perez assist into a 3-0 lead for the Mountain Lions at the 73:07 mark. Craig Caffery closed out the scoring 2:02 later when he beat the Buccaneer keeper after taking a pass from Khurram Shazad.
"We defended quality as a unit and it allowed us to penetrate at the right times going forward," said head coach Mark McKeever.
The Mountain Lions outshot Barry 12-4. Goalkeeper Pedro Ozi gathered two saves for Young Harris while Johnny Rodrigues had two for the Buccaneers.
