AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken scored four goals in a seven-minute span midway through the match to record a 5-2 Peach Belt Conference women's soccer victory over Young Harris College Wednesday (Sept. 25) afternoon at the Pacer Pit.
The Pacers improved to 4-3-0 overall and to 1-1-0 inside the Peach Belt while the Mountain Lions fell to 2-4-0 and to 0-2-0. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Sept. 28) when they travel to St. Augustine, Fla., for a 5 p.m. league encounter against Flagler College.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead at the 42:07 mark as Sydnee Thompson passed the ball to Dani Heald, who beat the USC Aiken goalkeeper. The Pacers leveled the match at 1 45 seconds before halftime on the first of two Megan Smits goals.
USC Aiken got back-to-back goals over a stretch of 50 seconds to open a 3-1 advantage. Hannah Allison scored the first off a direct kick and Smits followed with another goal at the 50:11 mark. A penalty kick by Amber Matthews 90 seconds later pulled the Mountain Lions within a goal at 3-2. It was the second strike in as many matches for Matthews.
Heaven Tylee's header off a Jenna Beauregard corner kick a few seconds later for USC Aiken pushed its lead back to 4-2. The Pacers added an insurance goal in the 75th minute from Akeyla Furbert.
Young Harris' Taylor Erickson had eight saves in goal for the Mountain Lions while Alli Edens had two for the Pacers.
