YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from the University of North Georgia in a battle of cross-mountain rivals Saturday (April 6) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
Adam Moore (4-2) earned the win and added a two-run homer in the opener as the Mountain Lions claimed a 7-1 victory while Zach Bricknell hit his Peach Belt-leading 11th homer – a grand slam – as Young Harris took a 9-6 decision in the nightcap.
The Mountain Lions won their fifth consecutive PBC game as they improved to 17-16 overall and to 7-13 in the league while the Saints dropped to 11-23 and 3-14. The two teams wrap up the weekend series with a 2 p.m. contest Sunday (April 7).
Young Harris took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first of the opener as David Atwood and Dom Wyshinski each had RBI singles. Moore made it 4-1 with a two-run homer – his fifth of the season – to left field in the fifth. Wyshinski added a two-run double in the seventh and Atwood closed out the scoring in the eighth on a fielder's choice in the eighth.
Moore went seven innings, allowing just three hits, to pick up the win, while Clint Spratlin (1-3) took the loss.
Wyshinski led the Mountain Lions with three hits while Mike Medori contributed two safeties.
The Mountain Lions took a 4-3 lead in the third inning of game two with three runs thanks the wildness by the Saints' pitching corps. Jack Morrow drove in a run with a bases-loaded hit batter and Wyshinksi added a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 3 and Young Harris took the lead for good on Tom Valichka's single to right.
Young Harris broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning to take a 9-3 lead. Wyshinski stroked an RBI single before Bricknell cleared the bases with a grand slam to left-center field. Bricknell has hit five homers in his last six games.
Tyler Isbell (1-0) earned the win with 4 1/3 innings of relief while Donald Frew registered his first save as he got the final out after the Saints scored three runs in the ninth inning. Jacob Beauchamp (0-5) took the loss for North Georgia.
Atwood, Morrow and Spencer Thomas each had two hits for the Mountain Lions in game two.
