YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College and the University of Montevallo split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader Monday (March 4) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
Zach Bricknell hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning as Young Harris took the opener 3-2 while Andrew Hill drove in four runs in the nightcap as Montevallo edged the Mountain Lions 9-7.
Young Harris improved to 8-7 overall and to 1-5 in the league while the Falcons fell to 12-7 and 6-3. Young Harris returns to the diamond Saturday (March 9) when they travel to Pembroke, N.C., for a 1 p.m. league doubleheader against the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The Mountain Lions were scheduled to play home contests Tuesday and Wednesday (March 5-6) against University of Pikeville, but they were canceled due to expected rain and snow.
The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the opener on
Adam Moore's solo homer in the third inning to left field. It was Moore's first homer of the season.
Montevallo tied the game at 1 in the fourth on a fielder error by Young Harris and then took the lead in the sixth on Vinnie Rodriguez's double. Bricknell gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with his fourth homer after
Tom Valichka singled.

Cody Beck (2-0) scattered four hits over 4.2 innings to pick up the victory while Montevallo starter Josh Clemen (1-2) took the loss.
Montevallo jumped out to a 6-0 lead as the Falcons scored three runs each in the first and third innings in the nightcap. Jackson Slaid had a two-run single in the first while Hill had a two-run single in the third.
The Mountain Lions got two runs back in the bottom of the third, including one on
Jack Morrow's single. The teams traded runs in the fourth inning as Montevallo took a 7-3 lead. Bricknell hit a homer to right-center in the fourth for Young Harris.
Montevallo pushed its lead to 9-3 with two runs in the seventh on Hill's two-run homer to left. Young Harris scored three times in the bottom half of the inning on Morrow's homer – his fourth of the season – to left.
Young Harris added a run in bottom of the ninth as the Falcons committed two errors. Reliever Cody Hughes earned his fourth save as he got
Trey Rogers and Moore to fly out to end the game with the bases loaded.
Edward Brandsema (2-2) earned the win for the Falcons while
Miles Nagel (0-2) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
