Home runs help Young Harris past Carson-Newman 9-5

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College hit three home runs as the Mountain Lions defeated Carson-Newman College 9-5 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday (Feb. 27) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.

Young Harris improved to 7-5 and will host the University of Montevallo in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series this weekend. The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (March 2) before concluding with a noon contest Sunday (March 3). The Eagles fell to 9-7.

Trey Rogers led off the bottom of the first with his fourth homer of the season to right field before Jack Morrow smacked a two-run homer to left field in the fourth to give the Mountain Lions a 3-0 lead. It was Morrow's third blast in 2013.

Young Harris broke open the game with a six-run sixth inning to take a 9-0 lead. The Mountain Lions turned one Carson-Newman error into five unearned runs. Dom Wyshinski started the rally with a one-out homer – his first of the year - to right-center field. Rogers had a RBI single to left-center and Zach Bricknell closed out the scoring with a two-run double to center.

Shade Jett started the Carson-Newman comeback with a two-run homer to right in the seventh while Cody Fox had a RBI double in the inning. The Eagles got their final run in the seventh on a ground out by Joe Tipton. Carson-Newman scored its final run in the ninth on a RBI single by Peter Rajkovich.

Travis Donahoo (1-0) earned the win with five scoreless innings but Dustin Dunagan (0-1) took the loss for the Eagles.

Rogers, Adam Moore, Bricknell, Wyshinski, David Atwood and Spencer Thomas each had two hits apiece for the Mountain Lions while Rajkovich and Jett did the same for the Eagles.
