LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Young Harris College rallied for a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over Georgia Gwinnett College Wednesday (Oct. 9) afternoon at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
Young Harris, which is ranked No. 12 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, improved to 8-1-0 while the Grizzlies fell to 7-4-0. The Mountain Lions return to competition Saturday (Oct. 12) when they host Francis Marion University in a 4 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest.
Georgia Gwinnett struck first under seven minutes into the game, when Rene Enang took a through ball, popped it over YHC goalkeeper Pedro Ozi, off the crossbar and over the line for the opening score.
The Mountain Lions tied the match at 1 at the 28:20 mark. Alex Wyper crossed to ball to Khurram Shazad, who found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Young Harris took the lead for good 4:50 into the second half as Shazad took a pass from William Schonfeldt, took it towards the goal, went by a defender and crossed the ball to Ilija Ilic at the back post for the strike. It was Ilic's team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Young Harris held a 15-10 advantage on shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Lewis Sharpe recorded four saves in net for the Grizzlies while Ozi stopped two for the Mountain Lions.
