UNC Pembroke edges Mountain Lions 3-2 in overtime

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Julia Nytorp scored two goals, including the golden goal in overtime, as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke took a 3-2 decision over Young Harris College Saturday (Oct. 26) afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Braves improved to 7-8-1 overall and to 4-4-1 in the Peach Belt while the Mountain Lions fell to 4-11-0 and 1-8-0. It was the sixth one-goal defeat and third overtime for Young Harris this year. The Mountain Lions return to action Wednesday (Oct. 30) when they host Clayton State University in a 2 p.m. home match.

Nytorp, who also converted a penalty kick in the first half, scored the deciding goal just 32 seconds into the extra time as she knocked in a rebound of Amber Watkins' initial shot that was cleared off the line by an YHC defender. It was Nytorp's five goal of 2013.

The Mountain Lions battled to tie the match at 2 as Whitney Thomas scored her team-leading ninth goal off a through ball from teammate Rachel Hill at the 70:40 mark. Hill had given the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead at the 23:43 mark after Liza Carpenter played the ball to her and she was able to put it in the left corner of the net. It was Hill's second goal of the year. The Braves had taken a 2-1 lead on Savanna Stiles' direct kick from 25 yards out at the 49:00 mark.

Taylor Erickson stopped 12 shots for the Mountain Lions in net while Claire Tracy had eight for UNC Pembroke.
