No. 11 Mountain Lions earn 3-2 short-handed victory over Eagles

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College scored two short-handed goals in the second half as the 11th-ranked Mountain Lions defeated Carson-Newman University 3-2 in a men's soccer non-conference match at the YHC Lacrosse Field Wednesday (Oct. 2) afternoon.

The Mountain Lions won their fifth consecutive match to improve to 7-1-0 while the Eagles fell to 4-3-0. Young Harris travels to Lawrenceville, Ga., for a 6 p.m. contest against Georgia Gwinnett College.

Young Harris jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 22:07 mark when Niall McCabe took a pass from Paco Craig and then took a shot from the top of the box that ricocheted off the left post and crossbar into the goal for his fifth strike of the season. The Mountain Lions would be forced to play a man down nine minutes later when Craig got his second caution of the match.

The Eagles tied the match at 1 at the 30:51 mark as Ross Frame crossed the ball to Kristian Speake who knocked it into the left corner of the goal. The Mountain Lions took back the lead 2:56 into the second half when Ilija Ilic converted a penalty kick after a teammate was fouled inside the box. It was Ilic's team-leading seventh goal of 2013.

Young Harris added an insurance goal at the 78:02 mark when McCabe served in a long ball to Alex Wyper down the left side of the field. Wyper then beat the Carson-Newman keeper for his fifth goal of the season. The Eagles added their final goal three minutes later when Jake Fielder took a through ball from Frame near the top of the box and then blasted it into the upper left corner of the net.

Pedro Ozi stopped seven shots in goal for the Mountain Lions while Rumwald LeGuevel had two for the Eagles.
