Georgia Gwinnett edges Young Harris 2-1 in double overtime

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. –Mackenzie Bailey's goal with 4:51 remaining in the second overtime gave Georgia Gwinnett College a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Young Harris College Wednesday (Oct. 16) afternoon at the newly refurbished Frances Wood Wilson Soccer and Lacrosse Field. It was the first match played on the new AstroTurf field.

The Grizzlies improved to 9-3-1 while the Mountain Lions suffered their fifth one-goal loss of the season as they fell to 3-9-0. Young Harris returns to Peach Belt Conference play Saturday (Oct. 19) when they travel to Americus, Ga., for a 1 p.m. contest against Georgia Southwestern State University.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half before Georgia Gwinnett struck first as Nikki LeFevre scored at the 54:30 mark. Mary Vernetti played the ball to LeFevre, who knocked the ball in the left corner of the goal from six yards out. Whitney Thomas tied the match at 1 13 minutes later as the Young Harris forward collected a loose at the top of the box and blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the net for her team-leading sixth goal of 2013.

Young Harris netminder Yustin Nambo, who stopped 13 shots for the second consecutive match, helped send the contest into extra time with her spectacular save with 2:01 remaining in regulation on Sara Lindell's shot.

The Grizzlies pulled out the win when Amanda Dale sent the ball to Bailey, who put the ball in the left corner of the goal for the deciding goal at the 105:09 mark. It was Bailey's third goal of the season.
