Young Harris tame Hurricanes 6-0

AMERICUS, Ga. – Whitney Thomas and Candace Edwards led Young Harris College past Georgia Southwestern State University 6-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday (Oct. 19) afternoon at Hurricane Field.

Thomas scored two goals while Edwards added a goal and assisted on two others as the Mountain Lions improved to 4-9-0 overall and to 1-6-0 in the Peach Belt while the Hurricanes fell to 0-13-1 and 0-7-1. Young Harris hits the road for the final time this season as they travel to Greenwood, S.C., for a 4:30 p.m. PBC contest against Lander University.

The Mountain Lions, which outshot Georgia Southwestern 36-11, erupted for three goals over an eight-minute span in the latter stages of the first half.

Thomas, who leads the team with eight goals, took a pass from Edwards, dribbled it pass the GSW defenders and beat the goalkeeper at the 31:44 mark. Rachel Hill added an unassisted goal five minutes later before Edwards and Thomas teamed up for the final goal. Edwards crossed the ball to Thomas, who finished from six yards out at the 39:24 mark.

Edwards, who has seven goals herself, got in the scoring column as she knocked a blast in the upper left corner of the goal five minutes into the second half. Erica Lowery added an unassisted goal as she followed her own free kick in the 62nd minute before Allison Burnham headed in Sydney Baird's corner kick with 63 seconds left in the match.

Yustin Nambo and Taylor Erickson stopped six shots as the Mountain Lions tallied their second shutout of 2013.
