YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Young Harris College men's soccer team celebrated their return to the top 10 with a 2-0 non-conference victory over Mars Hill University Tuesday (Oct. 15) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions vaulted six positions to No. 6 in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Top 25 poll that was released earlier in the day. The ranking matched the highest ever since the program became a four-year institution. Young Harris was ranked No. 6 during the middle of last season.
Young Harris won its eighth consecutive game as they improved 10-1-0 while the Lions fell to 4-7-0. The Mountain Lions will step back into Peach Belt Conference action Saturday (Oct. 19) when they travel to Americus, Ga., for a 3:30 p.m. contest against Georgia Southwestern State University.
The Mountain Lions wasted little time as they took a 1-0 lead 97 seconds into the match. Lewis Hilton collected a loose ball near the top of the box and blasted it in the left corner of the net from 15 yards out. It was Hilton's second score of the season.
Young Harris, which outshot Mars Hill 16-6, added an insurance goal midway through the first half. Niall McCabe, who leads the Peach Belt in assists with nine, crossed the ball from the right side to Ilija Ilic at the left post. Ilic then headed the ball in for his 10th goal – second most in the Peach Belt – in 2013.
Pedro Ozi recorded his fifth shutout of the season as he stopped two shots while Chris Mitchell had four for Mars Hill.
