YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Columbus State University scored four goals – two from Kansas Bayly - in the second half as the Cougars defeated Young Harris College 4-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field Saturday (Sept. 29) afternoon.
Columbus State, which is ranked No. 12 in the latest NSCAA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, improved to 9-1-0 overall and to 3-1-0 in the Peach Belt while the Mountain Lions fell to 5-3-0 and 1-3-0. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Oct. 3) when they travel to Milledgeville, Ga., for a 6 p.m. Peach Belt contest against Georgia College.
The Cougars, which outshot the Mountain Lions 29-9, broke through at the 53:46 mark when Stephanie Lowery converted a penalty kick, which was set up when teammate Kayla Brown was fouled inside the box. It was Lowery's fifth goal of the season.
"I thought we came in and played well in the first half," said Young Harris head coach Kathy Brown. "Columbus State is a very good team. Our lack of maturity showed as soon as they scored on us. That's a sign of the youthfulness of our team. There is a lot of good that can come out of a loss like this."
Columbus State put the match away with three goals over an eight-minute span. Bayly scored the first of her two goals at the 69:53 mark. She scored her fourth goal of the season four minutes later as she took a throw in from Chelsea Person and scored from in front of the box. Person gave the Cougars a 4-0 lead at the 77:12 mark when she collected a pass from Brown on the left side and scored. It was her third of 2012.
Young Harris goalkeeper Taylor Erickson recorded a career-high 15 saves while Mary Mancin and Meosha Hatcher combined for 3 for Columbus State.
