YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Ilija Ilic and Niall McCabe helped lead Young Harris College past the University of South Carolina Aiken 3-1 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field Wednesday (Sept. 19) afternoon.
The Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 6 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, improved to 6-0-0 overall and to 2-0-0 in the Peach Belt while the Pacers slipped to 1-1-2 and 0-1-0. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Sept. 22) when they host No. 14 Flagler College in a 2:30 p.m. league match.
Ilic scored his fourth goal of the season at the 54:53 mark when he headed the ball in off McCabe's direct kick. Ilic returned the favor 16 minutes later when he flicked it to McCabe, who tallied his team-leading sixth goal of the season to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead.
The Pacers got a goal back in the 78th minute as Noel Mais played a thru ball to Sajih Daychoum and cut the deficit to 2-1. The Mountain Lions added an insurance goal by Khurram Shazad – his third of the season – off McCabe's team-leading seventh assist with just under five minutes remaining.
