YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. –Flagler College took advantage of playing a man up for 58 minutes and scored four times for a 5-1 Peach Belt Conference men's soccer victory over Young Harris College Saturday (Sept. 22) afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
The Saints, who are ranked No. 14 in the latest NSCAA/NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, improved to 4-1-1 overall and to 3-0-0 inside the league. The sixth-ranked Mountain Lions absorbed their first loss of the season and fell to 6-1-0 and 2-1-0. Young Harris returns to action Sunday (Sept. 23) with a 2 p.m. home match against Georgia Gwinnett College.
Young Harris, which enjoyed a 13-4 shot advantage when the teams were at even strength, took a 1-0 lead when Lewis Hilton scored his fourth goal of the season off a corner kick from Niall McCabe, who leads the team with eight assists, at the 12:34 mark. Flagler tied the match at 1 when Zach Shanahan converted a penalty kick four minutes later.
After Declan Traquair was assessed a red card in the 33rd minute for a tackle, the Saints took the lead for good at the 61:08 mark when Marco Warren knocked in his first goal of the season after Joseph Toby's initial shot hit the post. Flagler added an insurance goal six minutes later for a 3-1 lead when Jonny Cosgrove played a through ball to teammate Jean Vega. Marco Padilla and Toby also added second-half strikes for the Saints.
Despite playing a man down the Mountain Lions held a 21-14 advantage on shots and a 10-2 margin on corner kicks. Flagler goalkeeper Camp Bissell tallied nine saves while Wezly Barnard had four for Young Harris.
