No. 11 Saints hand Mountain Lions 4-0 shutout in PBC opener

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – North Georgia College & State University used three first-half goals to defeat Young Harris College 4-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday (Sept. 15) evening at the North Georgia Soccer Field.

The Saints, who are ranked No. 11 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, improved to 7-0-0 overall and to 1-0-0 in the Peach Belt. The Mountain Lions, who were playing in their first-ever PBC contest, suffered their first loss as they fell to 4-1-0 and 0-1-0. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Sept. 19) with a 4:30 p.m. league contest against the University of South Carolina Aiken at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.

Megan Morrow scored the first goal of the game and her first of the season three minutes into the match as the ball bounced around in the box off a deflected shot. Kelly Penston scored her third goal of the season as Emily Bowen fed her the ball at the top of the box. Penston then deftly placed the ball into the back of the net to put the Saints up 2-0 10 minutes later.

Caroline Wallace capped the first half scoring for North Georgia as she cleaned up a free kick from Morrow. Morrow recorded a second assist in the second half when Sophia Matonak scored in the 54th minute.

North Georgia outshot the Mountain Lions 27-8. Taylor Erickson tallied 12 saves for the Mountain Lions while Mallory Sayre recorded five saves to record her fifth shutout of the season for the Saints.
