YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the match as the Mountain Lions defeated Brevard College 2-0 in a women's soccer match Tuesday (Sept. 11) afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 4-0-0 with their second shutout of the season while the Tornados fell to 1-3-1. Young Harris opens its inaugural Peach Belt Conference schedule Saturday (Sept. 15) when they travel to Dahlonega, Ga., for a 5 p.m. encounter against North Georgia College & State University.
Young Harris dominated the match as they outshot Brevard 29-3 (22-1 on goal), but couldn't find the back of the net as goalkeeper Brittany Webster turned away 19 shots. The Mountain Lions finally took a 1-0 lead at the 80:17 mark when Devin Waldron found Elana Newman at the far post on her corner kick, Newman converted the opportunity into her first collegiate goal. The Mountain Lions enjoyed a 12-0 advantage over the Tornados on corner kicks in the match.
The Mountain Lions added an insurance goal less than two minutes later as Mika Lopes converted a penalty kick after a Young Harris player was taken down inside the box.
Goalkeeper Taylor Erickson tallied a save for Young Harris as she notched her second shutout of 2012.
