Young Harris opens season with 3-0 shutout over Tornado

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College scored three times in a six-minute span in the early moments of the second half to open the 2012 women's soccer season with a 3-0 victory over King (Tenn.) College Thursday (Aug. 30) afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 1-0-0 and they will travel to Hartsville, S.C., for an 11 a.m. matinee Sunday (Sept. 2) against Coker College. The Tornado fell to 0-1-0.

Haley Holderfield opened the scoring for Young Harris in the 54th minute. Whitney Thomas fed Holderfield down the right side of the field and she knocked it past the King goalkeeper into the far corner.  Thomas made it 2-0 two minutes later off a Kelsey Battle assist. Holderfield closed out the scoring with another goal in the 60th minute when she collected a loose ball in the box and converted it for a three-goal lead.

Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Erickson registered eight saves as she recorded her first shutout of her collegiate career. Amanda Huffaker tallied seven saves for the Tornado.
