BRISTOL, Tenn. – Jarrod Payne's two-out single in the bottom of the 12th inning gave King (Tenn.) College a 4-3 victory over Young Harris College Thursday (May 3) afternoon to open a three-game baseball series at the King College Baseball Complex.
The Tornado improved to 29-19 while the Mountain Lions dropped their third consecutive game and fell to 35-13. The two teams conclude the 2012 season with a noon doubleheader Friday (May 4).
Carl Roberts started the rally with a one-out single up the middle off Young Harris reliever Cody Beck (4-2), who struck out six in five innings of relief. After a fielder's choice moved Roberts to second, Payne singled home Roberts with the game winner.
Brandon Houser (8-7) earned the win for the Tornado with a scoreless inning of relief.
Young Harris forced the extra innings – its longest of the season – when Trey Rogers single to left-center to score David Atwood, who had reached on a single of his own, to tie the game at 3 in the eighth.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on a Spencer Thomas RBI single before King took a 2-1 lead in their half of the inning thanks to two unearned runs. The Mountain Lions tied the game at 2 in the seventh on Sam Tarlton's run-scoring single to left-center. However, King retook the lead at 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh on another unearned run.
