YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Aaron Guinn and Cody Coffman combined to drive in seven runs as Tusculum College defeated Young Harris College 12-4 in a college baseball game Tuesday (Feb. 7) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Pioneers improved to 4-0 while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-3. Young Harris returns to action Friday (Feb. 10) when they travel to Florence, S.C., to play sixth-ranked Francis Marion University in a 3 p.m. contest.
Tusculum and Young Harris traded runs in the first. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead on Coffman's RBI single to center while the Mountain Lions tied the game in their half on an unearned run.
The Pioneers, who have outscored their opponents 18-1 in the second inning this season, broke the game open with eight runs in the second. Guinn gave Tusculum the lead for good with a two-run homer – his first of the season – to left field. Cade Stallings and Coffman each drew bases-loaded walks while Trey Drewery added a RBI single through the right side. Guinn drove in two more runs in the inning with a single to center before Nate Reid closed out the scoring with a run-scoring hit to left-center field.
"There are not many teams that you can expect to give up eight runs in an inning and expect to win," said Young Harris head coach Rick Robinson. "Tusculum is a very good team."
Young Harris got a run back in the second on another unearned run as the Pioneers committed three errors in the game. The Mountain Lions added runs in the fourth and sixth innings on long balls to trim the lead to 9-4. Bowen Klosinski hit his second homer of the season with a solo shot to left in the fourth while Zach Bricknell led off the sixth with a homer to right. It was his first of the season.
Tusculum scored three times in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Starter Clint Biggs (1-0) and reliever Billy Sivyer (first save) combined on the three-hitter for the Pioneers. Starter Travis Donahoo (0-1) allowed seven runs in 1 1/3 innings for the Mountain Lions.
