COLUMBUS, Ga. – The middle of the Young Harris College lineup banged out 10 hits and drove in six runs as the Mountain Lions slayed No. 4-ranked Columbus State University 13-7 in a college baseball game Tuesday (Feb. 21) afternoon at Ragsdale Field.
The Mountain Lions won their sixth consecutive game and defeated their third top-10 team of the season as they improved to 9-4 while the Cougars fell to 8-3. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Feb. 22) as they travel to Mars Hill, N.C., for a 2 p.m. start against Mars Hill College.
Zach Bricknell led the way for Young Harris with three hits – all for extra bases. Bricknell had two doubles and added his third homer of the season – a two-run shot to right in the seventh. Adam Moore also had three hits for the Mountain Lions and drove in a run. Jack Morrow had two hits, including his team-leading fourth homer of the season – a two-run blast to right-center in the sixth.
Young Harris took the lead for good at 6-5 with two runs in the third. Dom Wyshinski tied the game at 5 off reliever Bronson Gagner (0-1) with a single to center and Tom Valichka, who had two hits and drove in two runs, gave the Mountain Lions a lead they wouldn't relinquish with a RBI single to left.
The Mountain Lions pushed across an unearned in the fourth before tacking on two more in the fifth to take a 9-5 lead. Mike Medori, who had 2 RBI, had a sacrifice fly and Trey Rogers added a run-scoring single in the fifth. Columbus State got two runs back in its half of the fifth, but the Mountain Lions dashed any thoughts of a comeback by the Cougars with homers by Morrow and Bricknell in the sixth and seventh innings.
"The stars aligned just right and we outlasted them this time," said Young Harris head coach Rick Robinson. "Cody Beck did a great job of slowing them down for four innings innings."
Young Harris reliever Cody Beck (2-0) went 4 1/3 innings to pick up his second win of the season.
