YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College took both ends of a baseball doubleheader from Saint Augustine's College Friday (Feb. 17) at Zell B. Miller Field. The Mountain Lions won the opener 7-1 before claiming the second with a 2-0 shutout.
Young Harris won their third consecutive game and fifth in their past six games to improve to 6-4 while the Falcons fell to 5-7. Because of the anticipated rain later this weekend, the teams will play another doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 18).
The Mountain Lions jumped on Falcon starter John Hailey (1-3) for three runs in the first inning of the opener. David Atwood and Bowen Klosinski each contributed RBI doubles while Zach Bricknell added a run-scoring infield single.
The Falcons got a run back in the top of the second on a ground out by Luis Perez before Young Harris added single runs in its half of the second and third innings to take a 5-1 lead. Mike Medori accounted for the scoring in the second on his double to left while Bricknell added a sacrifice fly in the third.
Medori drove another run in the sixth on a sacrifice bunt while Trey Rogers hit the last of five doubles by the Mountain Lions to score the final run.
Adam Moore (1-1) earned the win as he scattered five hits and struck out three in 6 2/3 innings of work for the Mountain Lions.
Josh Rudnik (1-0) struck out eight in the nightcap as he tossed the first complete-game shutout of the season for Young Harris.
The Mountain Lions all the runs they needed in the fourth when they scored twice. Moore followed Bricknell's triple to left-center field with an RBI double that painted the left field line. Moore later scored on a wild pitch by Saint Augustine's starter Alex Di Dio (1-2).
"A couple of misplayed balls and a couple of bobbles on their part wound up being the difference in both games," said Young Harris head coach Rick Robinson. "However, (Josh) Rudnik and (Adam) Moore only giving up one run in nearly 14 innings will always give us a chance to win."
