FLORENCE, S.C. – Stephen Tarkenton registered three hits, including two two-out hits that drove in three runs, as sixth-ranked Francis Marion University beat Young Harris College 10-4 Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon on the second day of the Auddie Brown Baseball Classic at Cormell Field.
The Patriots improved to 3-2, while the Mountain Lions, who had defeated Francis Marion 7-2 Friday (Feb. 10), fell to 3-4. Young Harris concludes play at the Classic with a noon contest Sunday (Feb. 12) against King College.
Tyler Smith (1-0) earned the win as he pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed only three hits, while fanning three. Oliver Pratt (1-1), the second of four Young Harris hurlers, was tagged with the loss.
John Jones went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for Francis Marion, while Tarkenton was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three driven in. Brock McCallister went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Third baseman Adam Moore went 2-for-4 for Young Harris with two solo home runs to left field – one in the second inning and one in the sixth.
With the score tied at 4 in the bottom of the sixth, Michael Wilson tripled to center field and scored on a two-out throwing error. FMU added a single run in the seventh on an RBI triple by Jones and then pushed across four insurance runs in the eighth inning.
"FMU did a great job of moving the ball around the field with runners on base and we did a poor job in clutch situations," said Young Harris head coach Rick Robinson.
