YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Armstrong Atlantic State University survived a test as they edged Young Harris College 1-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday (Oct. 6) afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
The Pirates, who are ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, stretched their win streak to eight and kept pace atop the PBC standings as they improved to 8-1-1 overall and to 6-0-0 in the Peach Belt. Young Harris suffered its second consecutive 1-0 defeat as they fell to 5-5-0 and 1-5-0. The Mountain Lions return to action Tuesday (Oct. 9) when they travel to Lawrenceville, Ga., for a 7 p.m. non-conference match against Georgia Gwinnett College.
Armstrong, which outshot Young Harris 27-3 (13-1 on goal) looked to take a first-half lead, but a three-minute stretch saw the Pirates hit the crossbar three times - twice on shots from sophomore Mary Margaret Davis and once on a shot from Danielle Fey.
The pressure continued in the second half until Armstong was able to break through in the 71st minute. A cross from junior Andye Dawson left of the box was headed across the goal face by senior Morgan Mitchell. Young Harris goalkeeper Taylor Erickson got a piece of the ball, but senior Kristina Pascutti was able to get a touch on the loose ball and put it in the net for the deciding goal.
"I am incredible proud of the effort that all the girls put forth today," said Young Harris head coach Kathy Brown. "We came out strong and worked hard for 90 minutes. We played good soccer. It was a good feeling to have (Armstrong head coach) Eric (Faulconer) say we have a good team. Although the result is not what we would like, I feel we were successful."
Erickson made 12 saves in net for the Mountain Lions on the day, while Morgan Luckie made one save in net for the Pirates.
