PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Pembroke edged Young Harris College 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday (Oct. 20) afternoon at Varsity Grounds.
The Braves improved to 8-5-2 overall and to 4-4-1 in the league while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-8-0 and 2-7-0. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Oct. 24) when they travel to Morrow, Ga., for a 5 p.m. league encounter with Clayton State University.
UNCP took a 1-0 lead when Amalia Arvidsson's shot deflected off the crossbar and bounced past Young Harris' keeper Taylor Erickson in the 35th minute. It was her ninth of the season. The Braves added an insurance goal in the 71st minute on a goal by Rae-Shawna Campbell. It was Campbell's ninth strike of 2012.
The Mountain Lions, which outshot the Braves 8-5 in shots that were on goal, got a goal back when Mika Lopes converted a penalty kick in the 85th minute to get Young Harris within a goal at 2-1. It was Lopes' fifth goal of the campaign.
Britney Bennett registered the shutout for the Braves as she turned away seven shots while Erickson stopped three for the Mountain Lions.
