Three second-half goals give Lander a 4-1 win over Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Lander University scored three goals – two by Jamie Shaw – in a nine-minute span early in the second half as the Bearcats defeated Young Harris College  4-1 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Wednesday (Oct. 17) afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.

The Bearcats improved to 9-1-3 overall and 7-0-1 to remain in second place in the conference while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-7-0 and 2-6-0. Young Harris now hits the road for its final four matches of the season. The Mountain Lions start the road trip Saturday (Oct. 20) with a 12:30 p.m. contest against the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in Pembroke, N.C.

Young Harris jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Haley Holderfield scored her sixth goal of the season off a through ball down the left side of the field from Whitney Thomas at the 22:37 mark. Lander tied the match at 1 just over two minutes later as Hillary Ferguson connected on a 25-yard blast after teammate Danielle Shaw served the ball across the field to Ferguson.

Jamie Shaw opened the second-half scoring at the 50:58 mark as converted a Ferguson cross from the right side to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead. Lander, which outshot Young Harris 21-6 (11-2 in the second half), added a penalty kick from Sarah Piechocki four minutes later after a Bearcat was fouled inside the box. Jamie Shaw added a header in the 60th minute for her 10th score of 2012 off a Ferguson cross.

Goalkeeper Taylor Erickson had seven saves for the Mountain Lions while Kelsey Blair had five for the Bearcats.
