YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Mouhamed Bechir scored twice as the Young Harris College men's soccer team defeated Milligan College 2-1 in a non-conference match Wednesday (Oct. 10) afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 7 in the latest NSCAA Division II Southeast Region poll, improved to 10-2-1 while the Buffaloes fell to 8-4-0. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Oct. 13) afternoon when they host Georgia Southwestern State University in a 1 p.m. Peach Belt Conference match.
Lewis Hilton, who is second on the team with seven assists, fed Bechir a through ball in the center of the field and he was able to give Young Harris a 1-0 lead when he knocked in the right corner of the goal at the 4:44 mark. The Buffaloes equalized the match a 1 as Jonathan Colson flicked the ball to Chris Ochieng in the box and Ochieng scored just inside the left post at the 23:22 mark. It was Ochieng's team-leading 12th strike of the year.
Bechir scored the deciding goal at the 33:08 mark when he knocked in his second goal of the season off a flick from Ilija Ilic.
"I was very happy to win this one as it shows the depth in our squad with quality players missing from the starting lineup," said head coach Mark McKeever. "There were several moments of quality provided by (James) Thorpe, (Lewis) Hilton and (William) Schonfeldt. Individually, Mouhamed Bechir scored two quality team goals and I'm delighted for him having missed the first half of the season. Currently we have only lost to two national ranked teams, which speaks volumes for the consistency and quality we have provided."
The Mountain Lions led Milligan in the shot count at 17-9, including a 10-2 advantage in the second half. Dan Ball tallied eight saves in net for the Buffaloes while Jordan Bradshaw had five for Young Harris.
