YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College edged Clayton State University 1-0 in a women’s soccer match Thursday (Sept. 8) afternoon at Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 1-1-0 while the Lakers fell to 1-2-0. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Sept. 10) when they host Brenau University in a 4 p.m. contest.
Young Harris scored its goal on its first chance in the second half as Mika Lopes stole the ball at the top of the box and booted it past Clayton State goalkeeper Laoise O’Driscoll into the left corner of the net. It was Lopes’ second score of 2011.
It was more than enough for the Mountain Lions as Young Harris netminder Kelsey Cunningham notched her first shutout of the season. Cunningham turned away four Laker shots, including two in the final five minutes.
